Background:Bactrim is a type of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and there are currently no data concerning its effectiveness in the treatment of UTIs. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of Bactrim ds, a sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim combination for the treatment of UTIs.
Methods:We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients with chronic lower urinary tract infections (LUTI) treated with Bactrim for a period of up to 8 weeks. The study included patients who received Bactrim for a total of 10 years, with a median duration of 8 weeks. The mean number of UTIs was 4.7, and the mean duration of symptoms was 4.8 weeks. In this retrospective study, the clinical outcomes were compared between patients who received Bactrim and those who did not. Data on the occurrence of UTIs in the patients who received Bactrim were obtained from the medical record. The primary outcome was the overall proportion of patients with a UTI, who received Bactrim. The secondary outcome was the proportion of patients with a UTI with a negative culture result.
Results:Of the 16,812 patients treated for 10 years with Bactrim for a total of 8 weeks, 13,725 (88.3%) had a UTI. Of the patients who received Bactrim, 8,852 (57.2%) had a UTI and 3,611 (12.2%) had a negative culture result. There were 17,973 (73.3%) patients with a positive culture result, and 19,876 (71.8%) patients with a negative culture result.
Conclusions:The mean number of UTIs per year was 4.7, and the mean duration of symptoms was 4.8 weeks. Bactrim, a type of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, was associated with a significantly higher proportion of UTI cases in patients with a negative culture result, but not in those with a positive culture result.
The authors would like to thank R. A. G. Karp and B. D. S. R. for their assistance with statistical analysis.Acyclovir is the primary drug of choice for the treatment of acute sinusitis (AAS) in adults, who require lifelong antibiotic therapy. As with any drug, it must be taken as part of a comprehensive regimen. Bactrim, a sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, is a combination of two antibiotics used to treat acute sinusitis (AAS) and is available in both liquid and solid forms. The use of Bactrim for the treatment of AAS has been extensively studied. The results of Bactrim ds (AAS) in the current study showed that the mean duration of symptom resolution was 4.8 weeks. The mean total number of symptoms was 5.6, and the mean number of UTIs was 5.3. In addition, the mean duration of symptoms was 4.8 weeks, and the mean duration of symptoms was 4.6 weeks for patients with a positive culture result. However, no significant differences were found between the 2 groups. Therefore, it appears that the use of Bactrim ds was not associated with significant differences in the clinical outcomes between the 2 groups. In the present study, the median number of UTIs was 4.7, and the mean duration of symptoms was 4.8 weeks. However, Bactrim, a sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, was not associated with a significant difference in the clinical outcomes between the 2 groups. The authors have no relationships with any of the authors.
